Ground Cover Plants: 10 Tips for a Lush, Low-Maintenance Carpet
1. Plant at 8-12 Inch Spacing — The "Wait 5 Years" Approach Costs More in Weeding
At 24-inch spacing, ground covers take 3-4 years to fill in. During those years, you are weeding bare soil weekly. At 12-inch spacing, coverage in 1.5-2 seasons. At 8-inch spacing, coverage in 1-1.5 seasons. The extra plants cost $30-$60 more but save 50+ hours of weeding. Buy the plants.
2. Creeping Thyme Is the Best Stepable Ground Cover — and It Smells Amazing
Thymus serpyllum tolerates light foot traffic (1-2 walks/day), releases fragrance, and covers itself in pink-purple flowers in June-July. Zones 4-9. Full sun. 2-3 inches tall. The one downside: blooming thyme attracts bees — do not plant as a primary walkway near doors or patios.
3. Never Plant English Ivy, Vinca, or Winter Creeper
These three species are Category 1 invasives that escape cultivation, destroy forests, and cannot be removed once established. The alternatives: creeping phlox (sun), Allegheny spurge (native pachysandra, shade), or liriope (any condition). Ophiopogon japonicus ''Nana'' grows 2-3 inches tall in dense clumps. From 5 feet away, it reads as lawn. It never needs mowing. Zones 6-10. Shade to partial shade. Slow to establish (3-4 years to full coverage at 8-inch spacing) but virtually indestructible once established.
10. Use Landscape Edging to Contain Spreading Ground Covers
Steel edging buried 4-6 inches deep creates an underground barrier that surface-spreading ground covers (creeping Jenny, ajuga, vinca if you ignore Tip #3) cannot cross. Install the edging 2-3 inches above soil level as well — runners can and do climb over flush edging. This is mandatory for any ground cover described as "vigorous" or "fast-spreading" — code words for "will consume your garden if not contained."
